Job Purpose
To assist with the operation of the New Lanark Visitor Attraction and to enable a successful and enjoyable visit for every member of the public.
Role Description
This is a flexible role which covers a range of public facing duties including:
- Engaging with visitors as they explore New Lanark and enhancing their experience of the World Heritage site
- Delivery of themed guided tours to general visitors and specialist groups. Whilst VAAs will not necessarily be required to know and delivery every tour, subjects covered include but are not limited to:
- History of New Lanark
- Development of Wool & Textiles
- Architecture & the Built Environment
- Hydro-power & Renewable energy
- Robert Owen
- Delivery of seminars about New Lanark to groups on and off-site
- Assisting with the preparation & delivery of the New Lanark Learning Programme including:
- Meeting & greeting education groups
- Thematic workshops and tours
- Object handling sessions
- Role play sessions
- Preparing materials / crafts / spaces / costumes etc. in advance of sessions
- Costumed character interpretation
- Assisting with the planning, preparation, delivery and take-down of the New Lanark Events and Exhibitions Programme
- Reception duties including
- Meeting & greeting visitors
- Ticket & membership sales
- Explaining the site and the activity programmes
- Cash handling
- Telephone enquiries
- Dealing with customer enquiries
- Day to day housekeeping of exhibition areas
- Keeping the ‘What’s On’ areas up to date with leaflets and current posters etc.
- Any other duties reasonably requested
VAAs will be expected to work as part of the wider New Lanark Visitor Attraction team which includes New Lanark Trust staff (interpretation, learning and events), café & retail staff and a volunteer team. Staff may at times be requested to work in other areas of the attraction, such as the Mill shop and Mill Café.
Experience, Skills & Knowledge
Experience
- Experience of working in / a desire to work in tourism and heritage
- Experience of working with members of the public is desirable

- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate with audiences of all ages and abilities
- Polite, friendly and approachable
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good organisational skills and time management
- A commitment to Continued Professional Development and a willingness to learn and share knowledge
Knowledge
- An interest in history is essential and some knowledge of Scottish / New Lanark history is desirable

Variable- includes weekend and evening working
Salary
National Minimum Wage / Living Wage applies.
