Workshops explore travel in rural Lanarkshire

Community Action Lanarkshire (CAL) want to hear from residents and visitors of Rigside, Douglas, Glespin, Abington, Lamington, Crawford, Elvanfoot, Crawfordjohn, Leadhills and surrounding areas, to find out how people currently travel and why, and what issues they face in regards to sustainable and active travel.

Lanarkshire LEADER supported CAL are working with Urbantu Design to produce Sustainable Travel Action Plans for these communities as part of the Make Your Way project, funded by Paths for All’s “Smarter Choices Smarter Places” fund, and managed by the Rural Development Trust.

These Action Plans will identify various ways in which active and sustainable travel could be improved and set out priorities for each area, as well as ways that they can be achieved.

These plans will form a vital evidence base for taking more active and sustainable travel improvements forward, and the input of local communities is vitally important to understanding local issues and identifying potential solutions.

Residents and regular visitors to these communities now have the opportunity to be heard by dropping in to one of four drop-in workshops over the next two weekends, which will be held in Abington, Glespin (both on Feb 2nd), Leadhills and Lamington (both on Feb 9th).

Ewan Bachell, CAL Development Officer says, “Rural communities face unique and significant issues when it comes to travelling more actively and more sustainably”

He continues, “There is an increasing awareness that we all need to travel more actively and more sustainably, for both health and environmental benefits. We hope that these plans will reflect the concerns of rural communities and identify some opportunities that CAL can support local people to achieve.”

The workshops will be 10am-12pm in Abington Hall, and 1pm – 3pm in Glespin Hall on Sat 2nd Feb, and then 10am-12pm in Leadhills Hall, and 2pm – 4pm in Wiston Lodge on Sat 9th Feb.
