COVID_19 Update: Despite challenging times, access to the outdoors can bring a boost to your physical and mental wellbeing. Advice on access and social distancing is regularly updated. For up to date advice refer to the NHS Inform website by clicking here.

Please keep to social distancing guidelines when exercising and enjoy your local trails. Please avoid contact with wild animals and livestock at this time.

If you live around Rigside or Douglas Water, have you visited Loudon Pond Nature Reserve yet? This former mining village is now an oasis of nature, managed by the Loudon Pond and Glenfeigh Association . Community Action Lanarkshire is currently supporting the group to prepare a management plan to make it more accessible to people and rich in wildlife. View the South Lanarkshire Council information leaflet here

The association is a new generation of committee members trying to revitalise the reserve and create access-for-all paths to make it a place worth visiting and to make it easier for everybody to visit. In 2018 and 2019 the committee members, in partnership with Clydesdale Community Initiatives, arranged a number of very successful volunteering events which saw willow herb being cleared on site. New trees were also planted with saplings donated by the Woodland Trust and orchard apple trees paid for by the Coalfields Community Futures Fund. Monthly volunteering sessions had been arranged throughout 2020 but had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. This may change so please look out for updates later in the year.

Thanks to funding from the Renewable Energy Fund, the association appointed Mike Hyatt Landscape Architects to develop their site management action plan.
