Dig It! 2017 visit New Lanark Burial Ground

Exploring a hidden gem in the Clyde Valley

The Dig It! 2017 crew recently visited New Lanark Burial Ground, hidden away in the New Lanark Woods. Nestled on the side of the valley above the village, the burial ground was set aside by Robert Owen for the workers of his mill and was the last resting place of many Gaelic speaking folk from Caithness who came to work in Owen's utiopian enterprise.

Dig It! 2017 is a celebration of Scottish archaeology, co-ordinated by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and Archaeology Scotland for the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017. With a packed programme of events, from people exploring the story of their own local area, to digs, festivals, and even Minecraft, there are so many ways to get involved. We will be exploring our past through song, art, performance and storytelling. It will be exciting, fun, grassroots and messy – just like archaeology and archaeologists.
