The BIG MAP

Collaborative Mapping in the Clyde and Avon Valley

The BIG MAP was a collaborative creative mapping event that was held on several different occasions in different venues, including Chatelherault, Carluke and Morgan Glen. Participants of all ages worked together to create a total over 25 metres metres of a collaborative map that showed their stretch of a river.  Using only 4 different colours of paint and their imaginations, the map creators explored their connections to the landscape and to the waterways that connect different places together.

The participants were each assigned a short section of a long canvas and asked to paint a section of a map including a river. The only rule was to contiue their section of river from where the last painter had left off. Participants painted rivers frm their childhood memories, from their local landscapes, and even from their imaginations. The river meandered from Canada, through the Clyde Valley on its way to China, flowing through many fictional sections as well.

Visitors learned a little about the rich mapping heritage of the Clyde and Avon valley, and the legacy of Major-General William Roy along the way, while expressing their creativity and sense of place.
