Summerlee is the museum of Scottish industrial life and is based around the site of a 19th century ironworks.
Opening times: Open 7 Days a Week : From 1 April thought to 31 October: 10am to 5pm and From 1 November to 31 March: 10am to 4pm
Situated in Coatbridge, an important centre within Scotland’s ‘industrial heartland’, Summerlee museum of Scottish Industrial Life is built on the site of the old Summerlee Ironworks, and incorporated the main workshop of the former Hydrocon Crane Factory.
Summerlee was one of Scotland’s most important ironworks. Opened in 1836, it closed in 1926. The remains of its blast furnaces and other structures can be seen from the view pod and parapet at the north-east side of the main exhibition hall.
The museum makes a great family day out and has Scotland’s only operational heritage tramway, as well as a recreated mine with guided tours, miner’s cottage, an exhibition hall with working machinery, a play park, a café and a shop.
